525Whether you are in the Portland, Oregon, or further north in the  Seattle, WA area, it makes sense to shop at Trailer Boss for your dump trailer.

Trailer Boss has associates at all three of their locations which will help you get the dump trailer you need to make your business and personal work so much easier.

If you haven’t had a dump trailer before, Trailer Boss associates are here to help explain everything you will need to know about your new trailer. You might want to start with a bit of an explaination of how the volume is measured.

435In the United States, the volume of a dump trailer is measured in cubic yards. The space enclosed by the bed and the walls of dump trailers is the space which represents the volume.

Calculating the volume is much like the geometry problem given by teachers in a high school class. You need to know the length, width, and height of the trailers. When the side walls are not as tall as the front and rear walls, you should calculate the height using the shortest wall.

Knowing the dump truck volume helps eliminate the guess work in determining whether a certain size load can be carried which ultimately results in more accurate and reliable service to customers.

While the information about the size of load a truck can accommodate is easily found in the vehicle’s manual, knowing how to use it is a skill that is expected from an operator.

564Measuring Dump Bed Volume

In order to find a correct measurement, you might want to round up the following: a long measuring tape to measure the bed’s length, width and height; and a calculator to do the computations

When measuring, it is important to keep in mind to measure the inside of the bed and not the outside.

  • Length – Start by measuring the length of the bed in feet. Have an associate hold one end of the measuring tape for a more accurate reading.
  • Width – Next, measure the width of the dump truck bed. Again, get some help holding one end of the measuring tape.
  • Wall Height– Lastly, measure the height of the walls of the dump bed. Begin from the bottom toward the top end of the side.
  • Calculate – After obtaining measurements, simply multiply the length, width, and height to get the bed’s volume; the result will be in cubic feet. To convert cubic feet into cubic yards, simply divide the figures by 27.

For example: a bed is 14 feet long, 8 feet wide and 4 feet high. The bed volume is 448 cubic feet. Divide the 448 by 27 to convert it into yards and the result is 16.60 cubic yards.
