Congratulations on your first trailer purchase! Now you have to learn how to load and haul it. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
Here are a few tips to help get you on the road in your new trailer as soon as possible:
Prep your trailer:
Remember to use ropes and tie-downs to ensure that your cargo is secure– you definitely don’t want anything to fly off while you are cruising down the road!
In most scenarios, you will likely load heavier objects in the front of your trailer – but if you aren’t sure, check with your trailer manufacturer.
It might make sense to evenly disperse your load – instead try to keep about 60% of the weight upfront.
Once you are ready for the road:
Try not to exceed 55 miles per hour.
Try to leave 4 to 5 seconds of space between you and other vehicles on the road– reaction time is very important when hauling a trailer.
Always wear your seatbelt.
Stay alert the entire time you are driving – put down your phone!
Make wide turns to avoid hitting the curb.
Take your foot off the brake if your trailer starts swaying.
When going downhill, remember to use the same gear as you would when going uphill.
Make sure to slowdown while driving downhill.
Try to allow more space when passing.
The art of parking:
Always consider that you will have to exit the parking spot at some point – you don’t want to be in a situation where you will have to reverse to get out.
One neat trick for parking your trailer – steer from the bottom of the steering wheel. Then turning the wheel to the right makes the trailer go right and turning the wheel to the left makes the trailer go left. This is a bit confusing, but you will get the hang of it.
If you start to jack knife as you are backing up – it is usually best to pull forward and try again.
