Now that fall is headed our way, it is important to properly maintain your trailer.
If you forget this important step, your trailer can have issues with both functionality and liability.
If you have a utility trailer in Rochester, WA, here are some maintenance suggestions:
Attack any spots that appear to be rusting: Using steel wool or a piece of sand, remove the rust and use a rust proof paint and cover these spots. After the paint has dried, add a generous coat of wax, especially on the newly painted areas. Do this regularly to keep the whole trailer from rusting.
Grease the joints and axles: Dirt is not your trailer’s friend, because soils and particles cause friction. Friction can lead to components breaking down. Make sure you pay particular attention to the winch, ball hitch, springs, and tongue jack. Of course, one of the most important parts to grease are the wheel bearings. These are the cylindrical rings that connect the wheel to the axle and allow the trailer wheel to freely rotate.
Perform a safety Check: Check to make sure the safety chains are not stretched and don’t have any extensive wear.
Lights are important so make sure the tail, turn, and towing lights are working correctly: Too often we hear about highway pileups because a driver failed to notice a trailer.
