If you are headed into the mountains with your trailer this summer for one reason or another, it is important to take extra precautions. Driving on steep and windy roads is a difficult task for the typical vehicle, but even more so with a trailer.
Your tow vehicle and trailer are heavier than the typical car, making it imperative that you be aware of your surroundings.
Here are a few tips to stay safe on the road:
Follow the speed limit, or go a bit under it: There are some very sharp turns and narrow roads in the mountains that can pose a problem for you.
Watch out for other motorists: As a towing vehicle, it might take a bit longer for you to stop and start, especially when traveling uphill or downhill. Many drivers on the road do not realize that, so try to give yourself additional space at stops.
Move over when necessary: If there are cars that seem to be following you closely, take advantage of the passing lanes and move right to allow them to pass.
Get off the road if you break down: If at all possible, attempt to move your vehicle off the road to avoid a collision if you have car problems.
