Previously we talked about checking your tires for cracks to prevent blows outs as well as inflating them correctly. There are a couple other things you can consider to decrease your risk of having a blowout whether on a cargo trailer, utility trailer, dump trailer or any other trailer.
The Seattle, Spokane, Vancouver, BC, and Portland area all have high and low temperatures. Trailer tires are not immune to the shrinking and welling that outdoor temperatures can cause. As the summer heats up and then nights grow cool there can be cracking with your tires. When temperatures are changing, you need to visually inspect tires to insure they are not cracking.
Just like the trailer, tires have capacity ratings. Overloading a trailer is also overloading your tires. This puts stress on the tires. The pressure within the tire will rise. This causes flexing of the walls of the tire. If there are any small punctures or leaks in the tires, you have a higher risk of blowout. Keep yourself and your trailer safe by monitoring the size of your load.
If you come into Trailer Boss we will insure that you get the proper tire for your trailer. If, however, you have a trailer and want to replace the tires look for the size marking on the side of the old tire. There should be marked indication that they are for trailer use only.
Don’t change the size of the tire. Doing so would require changing the tongue height so the trailer can be kept at the proper angle when loaded. Determine the load range of the original tire and buy your new tire with the same load capacity. You can get this information off the side of the tire.
Be sure to match tire types. For example if the tire on the other side of the trailer are bias ply, replace the tire with a bias ply. If the other tire or tires are radial, you need a replacement tire that is also of radial construction.
If you have any concerns about tires or any other questions regarding the use of your trailer, come into Trailer Boss. We have skilled technicians and our staff are experts on the topic of towing.
